Like it is

Troy-D (USA): In 1982, Imagination released a 'mix' album titled 'Night Dubbing'. These were all dub-mix versions rather than remixes. 'Like it is' is the album that I was looking for in 1982. This album enabled them to, if not perfect an imperfect song, at least update a perfect song to 1989 standards. Plus it was time for a greatest hits collection (in the U.S.) and I guess with the various labels between the songs, it had to be done differently. The line up of the group changed and so did the sound. I don't know if Errol's leaving had anything to do with the drastic change found on the two new songs but it's no longer the Imagination of the early '80's. This time with remixers for producers. The two new songs 'L.T.O' and 'Give into love' are following in the house-club genre as did the remix of 'Instinctual' (which is also included in this collection). It's my thought that they chose this direction because of the success of 'Instinctual'. For me the song L.T.O. is quite as lifeless as the instrumentation in which it presents. Although with it's good vocal performance, it would probably work well in a club environment, where of course none of that matters. I was really disappointed with this song. The second new song 'Give into love' isn't much better in quality but I do like the song. It is in the same Chicago-house style as 'L.T.O' and 'Instinctual'. And Leee's falsetto reminds me a little of the disco-king/queen Sylvester on this song. But I think the club-groove of this song is also more appealing. As for the remixes...I feel they perfected the 'Body Talk' song by adding the additional piano and sythesizers. I wasn't very impressed with the original mix. In this revamped version the emptiness of the old version is gone. This song now sounds well arranged and complete. And for the first time, they have included the full vocal tracks to the remix of 'Burnin' Up'. But this song is a winner in any mix or form. I prefer this one with the complete verses. There is a live version of 'In and out of love' with a reggae- like rhythm which is impressive for the song doesn't lose it's appeal. The song 'Flashback' is the same version on 'Night Dubbing' but shorter (Thank God!, it just gets worse). And 'In the heat of the night' seems to be the same as the original. All the other songs are obvious retouched-revamped versions that update the material but doesn't quite make them better than their original forms.
