In the Heat of the Night

Gert-Jan (Holland): 'In the Heat of the Night' is Imagination's most succesfull album. It was their second album and it was the final breakthrough all over the world. It contains their biggest hits such as 'Just an illusion' and 'Music and lights'. The sleeve and the music takes you into the sensual atmosphere of hot summerevenings. If you listen carefully, you can taste the warmth of the twilight, which melts into the timeless melodies of 'All Night Loving'. Or as the song itself puts it; 'it's drifting into dreams so silently'. This album of Imagination is the purest form of imagination itself. It takes you to another dimension of fantasy and desire. The title of the album is the central theme and Imaginations succeeded to make the listener really feel this 'heat'. The exotic costumes and slow beats makes the picture complete. The songs speeds you up and cools you down, but you'll never loose your attention. The album is the example of the fantastic cooperation between a superb producersteam (Jolley and Swain) and the creative minds of Leee, Ashley and Errol. You can taste the spontaneous synergy. The sound of Imagination is incomparable. No artist or group sounds similar. 'In the Heat of the Night' is the example of this unique pure Imagination-sound, with the pulling bases and the typical piano. This masterpiece did exceed all expectations. It became platina all over the world and the group definitely earned the nickname 'the Black Beatles'.

Troy-D (USA): After the 'Body Talk' album I was eager to hear the next project from Imagination. Here in the U.S., we received 'Illusion' as the first single from the album. This was more than what I was expecting. And I guess that's why it has become their signature song. It combined all the good elements of their first album. 'Illusion' was a commercial-dreamy dance funk/R&B song. It was irresistable. For me...the album had two other irresistable songs. The other U.S. single was 'Changes' which was released as a 12". Another funky-dance number with commercial appeal. And when I heard 'Music and Lights', this became the defining album of Imagination for me. The title song was very similiar to 'In and out' but it had it's own appeal with the blending of Leee and Ashley's voices. The only other song that stands out is 'One more love'. This song was a good display of diversity in song style, unlike the other slow songs from the album. 'In the heat of the night' was a great second offering from the group. It definately had me hooked but still wanting more.

Hugh (USA): With outrageous outfits and a distinctive sound, Imagination hit the British music scene with a big splash in 1981 with their impressive debut Body Talk. This sophomore effort was no disappointment with Just An Illusion, the lead off single, becoming Imagination's biggest hit. Imagination's music is built around lead singer Leee John's falsetto and bassist Ashley Ingram's "three dimensional" bass. Producer Tony Swain's acoustic piano solos add a jazz appeal to the deep grooves. The piano solo on Heart 'N Soul is particularly impressive as Swain works up to a climactic frenzy.
